Job Description: SCHOOL BUS AIDE
The requirements listed below under the job title are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required to perform the duties of this position.
 

  1. JOB DESCRIPTION: The essential function of this position is to assist the School Bus Driver with maintaining safe and comfortable transportation for assigned students to and from designated stops.

  2. QUALIFICATIONS.

    1. Meets state requirements for qualifications certifications and licensure, if any.

    2. Ability to provide services to students of varying ages and sizes.

    3. Effective organizational, communication and interpersonal communication skills.

    4. Must be able to follow oral and written directions and have the ability to establish effective working relationships with School District staff and students.

    5. Endeavors to understand and respect the values and traditions of the diverse cultures represented in the community and in the school.

    6. Manifests a positive role in school/community relations.

    7. Such additional qualifications to the above as the Board of Education may find appropriate and acceptable and as agreed upon in writing by Kelly Educational (KE).


  3. REPORTING STRUCTURE.   

    1. The KE Substitute School Bus Aide will report to and be under the direction and supervision of the School Bus Driver and/or other appropriate School District authority.

    2. The KE Substitute School Bus Aide will receive day-to-day instruction from appropriate School District management.


  4. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILTIES.

    Provides services to students by performing the following essential duties and responsibilities under the direction and supervision of the School Bus Driver and/or School District management:

    1. Report to school office at beginning of school day to pick up required instructions and at the end of the school day to return materials. 

    2. Assists the bus driver with following the student code of conduct and safety rules for school bus safety, as directed by the School District.

    3. Assists the bus driver in taking attendance of students on the bus, as directed by the School District.

    4. Assists the bus driver in maintaining students conduct on the bus.

    5. Assists young or disabled students in getting on and off the bus.

    6. Provides instruction to students regarding passenger safety and ensure the students wear their seatbelts, as directed by the School District.

    7. Report misconduct of students appropriately to the designated School Bus Driver.

    8. Maintains discipline on the bus in accordance with directions of the school district.  

    9. Position self on the bus in a location which allows observation and assistance to all students at all times.

    10. Ability to provide PM and possible AM bus aid support for commute.

    11. Greets students when entering the school bus.

    12. Helping students find assigned or available seats.

    13. Dress in a safe and appropriate manner as described in the KE Standards of Professional Conduct

    14. Reports to the Kelly representative within 24 hours of occurrence, an incident that results in injury, illness, harm, or the potential for significant harm to a student.

    15. Perform such additional duties as the Board of Education may find appropriate and acceptable and as agreed upon in writing by Kelly Educational Staffing.

Conducts these additional duties when assisting while assigned to a School District bus:

  1. Assist with safe loading and unloading of special needs students, as instructed by the School District.

 

  1. Assist Bus Driver in keeping bus clean, but will not include use of hazardous chemicals or cleaning materials.

 

  1. Ensure that each student is secured (seatbelts, harnesses, and wheelchairs), as needed.

 

  1. If emergency evacuation is necessary, follow direction and supervision of School Bus driver. 

 

  1. Follow all policies and laws governing transportation of students, as provided by the School District.

 

  1. For your own safety as well as that of students and district staff, Kelly Education requires adherence to a ‘S.A.F.E. Touch’ policy as it relates to physical contact between you and students. This policy is located in the Kelly Education Handbook Addendum, reference Section: KELLY EDUCATION ‘S.A.F.E TOUCH’ POLICY.

 

  1. UNACCEPTABLE DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITES.

 

    1. KE School Bus Aides shall not:

      1. Use corporal punishment. 

      2. Grant permission for a student to leave the School Bus before the student’s designated stop, as directed by the School District.

      3. Detain a student after their designated bus stop.

      4. Communicate information about a student or staff member with anyone but the District/School principal or department head.

      5. Leave money or valuables on the school bus.

      6. Leave students unsupervised at any time on the school bus.

      7. Perform bus driving, driving education, and/or Crossing guard duties.

      8. Be placed on assignments where the bus driver is not an employee of the School District.

      9. Be asked to ride on bus routes not mutually agreed to by Kelly and the School District.

      10. Be responsible for ensuring students get on the correct school bus.

      11. Have access to medical records or other confidential student information.


 

    1. For the physical safety of the students and the KE School Bus Aide and to avoid KE being held liable for injuries, the KE School Bus Aide shall not perform the following duties:

      1. Administer medication.

      2. Diagnose an injury or illness that is actual, perceived, suspected, or claimed.

      3. Have sole supervision of a school bus.

      4. Have sole supervision for releasing a student(s) onto or off of a school bus or other vehicle.

      5. Transport students in a motor vehicle.

      6. Be alone with a student in a private setting.


    2. The KE School Bus Aide shall not be placed on assignments that require the following:

      1. Administering feeding or breathing tubes.

      2. Diapering, toileting and/or dressing involving personal undergarments.

      3. Leading, directing or sole supervision of students.

      4. Having one-on-one contact with special needs students including physical restraint.


 

  1. EDUCATION , EXPERIENCE and REQUIREMENTS

  1. High school diploma required

  2. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with school staff, students and parents

  3. Capable of interacting positively with students and adults

  4. Has patience and doesn’t anger easily

  5. Must excel at reading and following detailed instruction

  6. Meets physical demands listed below

  7. Previous experience as a school bus aide preferred

  8. Must successfully complete all required training

 

  1. PHYSICAL DEMANDS.

    The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. 

    1. While performing the duties of this job, the KE School Bus Aide may be required to sit for regular periods of time and/or be confined to smaller spaces. 

    2. The KE School Bus Aide must be able to move swiftly and navigate stairs.

    3. The KE School Bus Aide frequently is required to stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, and talk or hear. 

    4. KE School Bus Aide must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. 

    5. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and color vision.
