Kelly Engineering is currently seeking an experienced Electrical Designer for a long-term opportunity with a leading Central Engineering organization located in Houston, Texas!

About you:
You will function as an Electrical Designer on projects of $10 million and greater.  The Electrical Designer is a member of a global capital project design team that is made up of members from several different engineering disciplines including Civil, Piping, Mechanical, Instrumentation, and Process Automation.  You will provide expertise for the completion of capital projects in the electrical engineering discipline in order to ensure safe, economical, constructible and maintainable designs.  You apply applicable design criteria, design tools, best practices, and established work processes when creating the documentation required for the selection, purchase, and installation of electrical equipment in new or existing process plants. 

With support from the design lead and the peer designers, you will be able to effectively apply the Dow design tools, work processes, Dow standards, and best practices.

Key Responsibilities:
•    Aids in the development of scopes, estimates, schedules, design strategies and required resources on projects
•    Designs electrical systems that are safe, reliable, economical, constructible, and maintainable in accordance with Dow standards and work processes. Systems will include both new installations and modernization of existing facilities. Systems will incorporate multiple areas of electrical technology
•    Coordinates the activities of other designers to accomplish electrical design of projects, as well as exchanges technical information with peers, other engineering disciplines, and suppliers
•    Uses CAE/CAD tools to create complex detailed design drawings and documentation used for construction bid packages and for inquiring/ordering electrical equipment
•    Evaluates Dow design standards for correctness, applicability, and relevance to particular electrical installations. Submits Management of Change (MOC) documents to correct existing design standards or to create new ones
•    Has the ability to independently perform electrical design functions in the following areas:  Grounding, Lighting, Communications, Power distribution <1000V, Schematic development, Equipment specifications and procurement, Electrical Load and short circuit calculations, Electrical switchroom design and layout
•    Has the ability to understand, develop, and use many different types of engineering documentation, including but not limited to:  P&IDs, One line Diagrams, Three line diagrams, Schematics, Interconnection diagrams, Equipment location plans, Hazardous Area classification plans, Electrical equipment installation instructions provided by suppliers, Electrical Equipment lists, load schedules, and cable schedules
•    Has superior knowledge and understanding of electrical equipment and the various parameters which affect their application and installation, including but not limited to:  Power and control transformers, Power distribution equipment (switchgear, MCCs, motor controllers), Wire, cable, conduit, raceways, cable tray, 5kV and below induction motors, Power electronics and variable speed drives, Lighting, Communications, and Fuses
 

Required qualifications:
•    A minimum 5 years of electrical design experience in heavy industrial, petrochemical, refinery, or utility power systems design
•    Working knowledge of industry codes and standards (NFPA, ANSI, NEC)
•    Willingness to travel to sites for meetings and field data collection.

Willing and able to meet physical demands of the job, with or without reasonable accommodations:
•    Must be able to do field data collection work in an operating chemical plant, which includes taking field measurements and climbing stairs and ladders
•    Able to work in a petrochemical environment where hard hat, fire retardant clothing, hearing protection, and eye protection will be required.

Your preferred qualifications include:
•    An associate degree or higher  
•    MS Office Applications (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint)
•    Electrical equipment sizing and selection.
•    Able to develop designs in 3D modeling software
•    Able to develop designs in CAE tools (MicroStation, AutoCAD, etc.)
