Kelly Science & Clinical is currently seeking Environmental Chemist for one of our clients, an environmental safety company, located in Germantown, WI.
As a Environmental Chemist you role will be responsible for managing and obtaining approvals for waste streams accepted by Treatment, Storage and Disposal Facilities (TSDFs) that handle various types of hazardous waste.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES INCLUDE:
- Waste Stream Characterization. Review waste characterization data provided by waste generators, to ensure alignment with regulatory requirements and facility acceptability criteria. Coordinate necessary sampling, testing or analysis to validate.
- Waste Evaluation. Assess waste proposed for acceptance by the TSDF, including reviewing documentation and conducting appropriate analyses. Evaluate potential environmental impacts and risks associated with the waste.
- Regulatory Compliance. Stay updated on relevant environmental regulations, policies, and guidelines related to TSDF operations and waste management. Ensure compliance with local, state and federal regulations and industry standards.
- Permitting and Approval Process. Prepare and submit waste profiles and other necessary documentation to receiving facilities for approval of new waste or modifications to existing waste streams. Ensure accuracy, completeness and alignment with regulatory requirements.
- Agency Coordination. Serve as the point of contact with regulatory agencies regarding waste stream evaluation and approvals including engaging in discussions, response to inquiries, provide required information, and address concerns or issues.
- Collaboration with Internal Teams. Work closely with cross-functional teams within the company, such as environmental/health/safety, sales, operations, and legal to ensure proper assessment and acceptance. Provide guidance and support to internal stakeholders regarding compliance obligations.
- Compliance Monitoring. Establish and implement systems to monitor and track proper management of accepted waste streams. Conduct periodic audits and inspections to verify compliance with regulatory requirements and maintain accurate records.
- Reporting and Documentation. Prepare accurate reports required to be submitted regulatory agencies in a timely manner.
- Continuous Improvement. Identify opportunities for process improvement, approval process, efficiency, workflow and compliance of the waste evaluation process.
- Stakeholder Engagement. Engage with waste generators, contractors, consultants, and other external stakeholders involved in waste stream management. Address concerns, provide guidance and foster transparent communication.
Qualification and Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, environmental engineering, chemistry or a related field. Advance degree a plus.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail and accuracy.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, be a team player, self-motivated with good organizational skills and ability to adapt to new challenges enabling effective collaboration with internal teams, regulatory agencies, waste generators and external stakeholders.
- Strong organization and project management abilities to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
- In-depth knowledge of hazardous waste management regulations, including RCRA, DOT, CERCLA and other relevant local, state and federal regulations specific to waste stream management is a plus.
- Professional certifications such as Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM) or Certified Hazardous Materials Practitioner (CHMP) are desirable.
