Position Summary

We are currently seeking a Health and Safety Manager for an exciting opportunity with a company in the renewable gas industry. This role can be based in Illinois, Indiana or Minnesota and requires 50% travel to company facilities around the midwest.

The Health & Safety (H&S) Manager is responsible for creating and managing comprehensive H&S strategies, systems, and programs. This role will ensure compliance with all safety and environmental regulations while promoting a culture of health and safety. The H&S Manager will drive continuous improvement in H&S performance and support the company’s growth in the renewable gas industry. This position reports to the Chief Operating Officer on an interim basis and collaborates closely with senior leadership to ensure independent communication to the executive team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute H&S strategies aligned with business objectives and industry best practices

  • Oversee the creation and maintenance of H&S policies, procedures, and management systems

  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local H&S regulations

  • Integrate H&S considerations into business decisions and growth strategies

  • Manage the H&S budget and resource allocation

  • Lead incident investigations, root cause analyses, and corrective actions

  • Ensure H&S principles are integrated into operator training programs

  • Review and approve contractor safety programs for compliance

  • Develop and track H&S performance KPIs, providing reports to senior management

  • Lead emergency preparedness and response planning

  • Stay updated on emerging H&S trends, technologies, and regulations

  • Conduct safety audits at operating facilities and construction sites

Required Skills / Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Health and Safety, Environmental Engineering, or related field

  • 10+ years of H&S management experience, with 5+ years in an industrial processing industry

  • Extensive knowledge of OSHA, EPA, and other relevant regulatory standards

  • Proven success in developing and implementing H&S programs

  • Strong influencing and motivational skills at all organizational levels

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with effective presentation abilities

  • Experience with H&S management systems like ISO 14001, ISO 45001, and OSHA VPP

  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) preferred; additional certifications (e.g., CIH, CHMM) are a plus

  • Familiarity with renewable energy or biogas industries is advantageous

  • Proficient in data analysis and reporting, translating H&S metrics into actionable insights

  • Strong problem-solving skills and decision-making ability under pressure

  • Willingness to travel as needed (approximately 50% of the time)
