Financial Aid Specialist
Location: Auburn Hills, MI
Shift: Full-Time (8:30am – 5:00pm)
Compensation: $20.50 /hour

Job Summary:
A Financial Aid Advisor plays a critical role in helping students navigate the complex world of financial aid. They are responsible for advising and assisting students and their families in applying for financial assistance, including scholarships, grants, and loans. This position requires strong communication skills, attention to detail, and a deep understanding of financial aid policies and regulations.
 
Responsibilities:

  • Provide information and assist in all aspects of the financial aid process.

  • Perform technical duties in order to accomplish the functions of the Student Financial Resources and Scholarship Department.

  • Knowledge of all federal , state and institutional regulations, policies and procedures. Assist in the implementation of new federal and state Financial Aid regulations.

  • Knowledge of the financial aid application process for federal, state and institutional programs.

  • Advise/coach students from all cultures and social-economical backgrounds, through the process of applying for and receiving student financial aid face-to-face and virtually (live CHAT, telephones, student email box, one-on-one appointments via Zoom or telephone).

  • Facilitate the pre-awarding eligibility determination, Active ISIR’S, verification, TIP, F4F/MI Reconnect, Unusual Enrollment History (UEH), any ineligibility issues, etc.

  • Update daily student filed completed dates in Colleague using report generated in student forms.

  • Verify verification codes are correct. Identify students with IRIS’s. Adjust student self-service checklist if necessary.

  • Make corrections and assist in the verification of students FAFSA’s. Perform transmittal review, calculation, and monitoring of all financial aid awards for disbursement.

  • Evaluate and process the Return of Title IV Funds and N marks.

  • Troubleshoot/Investigate student, federal, state and institutional inquiries/complaints, to determine resolution or consult with Financial Aid Management for guidance, and compose memos and other relevant correspondence, if needed.

  • Assist the Financial Aid Managers with the Communication Management Processing.

  • Assist the Financial Aid Mangers with the administration of federal, state, and institutional aid programs, maintenance of program databases, validating eligibility, active ISIR’s, ineligibility issues, student loan exit counseling completion and follow-up, scholarships, etc.

  • Effective and efficient use of technology – Outlook, ACD phones, federal and state software, Colleague, Communication Management, Student Forms, Scholarship Universe, etc. Utilize federal and state websites and databases.

  • Active participation in all training activities necessary to update financial aid knowledge and skills and other relevant professional development opportunities.

  • Hire, train, and direct college students personnel with appropriate approval.

  • Assist veteran student: answer questions regarding VA benefits and applications. Process, activate VA educational benefits, verify enrollment before payments of funds, maintain Veteran records and update database of active VA students.

  • Track and reconcile financial financials for students payments from the VA & debts to the VA, apply payments to students accounts, create specialized reports from data, & communicate any issues to VA Supervisor if applicable.

  • Perform related tasks as assigned.

 
 Requirements:

  • An earned Associate Degree or higher in Accounting, Business Administration, Business Information Systems, or Computer Information Systems OR Any Associate Degree or higher with 16 college credit hours in Accounting, Business Administration (BUS1100, BUS 2030, BUS 2530, MKT 2520, ACC 1800, ACC 1810, ACC 1820 and CIS 1050), Business Information Systems, or Computer Information Systems.

  • Two (2) years customer service experience.
