We are currently seeking a Confocal Imaging Scientist with the National Institutes of Health in Baltimore, MD.

POSITION SUMMARY: 

This position at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) involves providing essential research support and technical services for the Confocal Imaging Facility core. The role encompasses conducting advanced microscopy techniques, including confocal and electron microscopy, supporting laboratory experiments and procedures, and maintaining laboratory operations. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in biological research with proficient skills in digital imaging, sample preparation, and microscopy analysis. 

 

TASKS. The contractor shall: 

  • Perform routine embedding and sample preparation for electron microscopy, including ultra-microtomy and cryo-fixation techniques. 

  • Acquire and analyze images using confocal light microscopy and digital imaging systems. 

  • Employ immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence techniques. 

  • Apply super-resolution microscopy techniques. 

  • Prepare solutions, chemicals, and samples for TEM, including resin embedding and immunogold labeling. 

  • Troubleshoot and optimize laboratory protocols and instrumentation. 

  • Provide user training and support for various microscopy and laboratory equipment. 

  • Maintain a clean and organized laboratory environment. 

  • Interpret and record research or operational data. 

  • Conduct histological techniques such as tissue and whole-mount in situ hybridization. 

  • Perform molecular biological analyses and harvest mouse embryos, tissues, and organs. 

  • Manage and maintain laboratory supplies, equipment, and experimental records. 

  • Support the research goals of the laboratory through various experiments and procedures. 

 

REQUIREMENTS. The contractor must have: 

  • Master’s degree in Biology or a related discipline. 

  • A minimum of 4 years of experience in a biological research setting with proficiency in classic embedding and sample preparation techniques. 

  • Proficiency in confocal light microscopy and familiarity with automated imaging systems. 

  • Experience in using Scanning Electron Microscopes (SEMs) or Transmission Electron Microscopes (TEMs), with a preference for experience with Focused Ion Beam SEM or volumetric electron microscopy. 

  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite, FIJI-Image J, and Zeiss Zen software. 

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills. 

  • Experience in cryo-fixation preparation for electron microscopy is a plus. 

  • Familiarity with 3D reconstruction software and digital imaging of biological systems. 

  • Ability to prepare, organize, and maintain various lab samples, supplies, and equipment.
