A deeper dive into substitute teacher requirements.

The Utah State Board of Education (USBE) does not issue a substitute teacher certification or supplemental credentialing. However, candidates should research the local district’s job description, as additional employment conditions may exist to become a substitute teacher in your area.

The hiring process for prospective substitute teachers does require you to be proactive in accomplishing a few steps. Our team can help facilitate the process when working with our partner districts, but candidates must keep up with details like transcript requests.

Education verification.

The minimum education for substitute teachers in Utah is a high school diploma or equivalent. Contact your high school registrar’s office to request official copies of your transcripts. Initiate this step early in the process, as these requests can take some time to process.

Even though it’s not a USBE requirement, you should also gather your transcripts for any undergraduate coursework you’ve completed. Local school districts may prefer or require that candidates have some college education or even a bachelor’s degree; applicants with secondary education credentials will qualify for more job postings.

Employment verification.

Like most jobs, substitute teachers must provide proof that they can legally work in the U.S. To complete this step, you’ll submit an I-9 form with valid identification credentials. This form can be completed in just a few minutes. If working with Kelly Education, we’ll guide you through this process.

Background check and fingerprinting.

All Utah educators must pass a formal background check associated with the USBE. Background checks through other agencies will not count. You will also complete a fingerprint screening. If you work with a Kelly Education partner school, your recruiter will provide instructions and support.

Applicants are responsible for any costs associated with these background checks, but these steps are crucial to ensure student safety and well-being.

Training.

Utah does not have state-required training for substitute teachers. However, to join our team of educators, Kelly Education has a pre-hire training obligation. Our ClassSmarts online course covers vital topics like teaching ethics, the legal obligations of educators, and classroom management best practices. This training helps all candidates feel more confident entering the classroom space, regardless of their prior teaching experience.

In addition to the training course, our substitute teachers attend a paid, online New Hire Orientation. This one-hour onboarding commitment reviews your specific school district’s unique policies and procedures.
