In case of an active fire near your home
If an active fire is in close proximity to your home, it is advisable to evacuate. Fires can spread rapidly, and the smoke plume can severely impair visibility during evacuation. Additionally, it is nearly impossible to prevent dense smoke from infiltrating indoor air. Closely monitor local emergency alerts to determine the appropriate time for evacuation.
When smoke levels are high but the fire is not a direct threat
Even if the fire is not directly threatening your home, high smoke levels can infiltrate your living space and make breathing difficult. It is essential to learn how to prepare for and respond to this situation. Stay updated with your local news, EPA's AirNow website, or your state air quality website for the latest information on air quality during active fires.
Smoke from distant wildfires
Smoke from wildfires that are far away, even thousands of miles, can occasionally reach your community. However, the concentration of such distant smoke is typically very small and may be less significant than local sources of particle pollution. In these instances, monitoring your local outdoor air quality via AirNow.gov and managing your indoor air quality as usual is recommended.
